Does anyone know exactly what color the lettering on Monon steam locomotives was. I have seen a couple of color shots where the letters and numbers are gold. Was this common, or were a couple painted in this manner? Most photos in the archives are B/W so lettering appears to be white.

Tom,
The vast majority of Monon steam locomotives were lettered in white, however a few were lettered in gold. I'll search my Monon photos and try to find out if I have any examples. The problem is that finding a color Monon steam photo is difficult.
We may have some examples in the Society's Photo Archives database.

I believe the only ones that were gold were the few locomotives with the fancy script on the tenders. I've no doubt the standard color was white. / Ron

Here's a color photo of J4 #572 in gold paint, withOUT the "fancy script".
