CSX, Canadian National agree to swap lines

 Published: August 17, 2012

CHICAGO – CSX Transportation has applied with the Surface Transportation Board to acquire operating rights on Canadian National's former Grand Trunk Western route into Chicago. In exchange, CN is to receive operating rights over CSX in western Tennessee.

CSX seeks to acquire an "exclusive, perpetual non-assignable railroad operating easement" over approximately 22 miles of former Grand Trunk Western track between Munster, Ind., and Edlsdon, Ill. This would enable CSX to route its trains, bound for Barr Yard, around the busy junction at Dolton, Ill., and provide a direct route into BNSF Railways Corwith Yard.

On the reverse of the trade, CN will receive the same "exclusive, perpetual non-assignable operating easement" over approximately 2 miles of track between Leewood and Aulon, Tenn., on CSX's Memphis Terminal Subdivision. This will result in CN having greater control of the operation of its trains between Chicago, Memphis, and New Orleans. A regulatory filing for the Tennessee portion has not yet been filed.

Each railroad will retain ownership of and trackage rights on their respective properties but will forfeit responsibility for maintenance, dispatching, and capital improvements.

CSX proposes rerouting approximately 25 trains daily over the CN route. This would include trains operating to and from the former Monon route to Indianapolis, the former Chicago & Eastern Illinois route to Evansville, Ind. This would save the company in excess of $2 million annually

Amtrak's Cardinal operates over the route between Munster and Thornton Jct., Ill.
