Stemm Depot?
« on: June 29, 2015, 11:58:22 am »
Did the Monon ever have any type of depot at Stemm, IN located between Guthrie and Peerless?  Current Atlas maps shown the trackage running through this small town.

It is not shown on the CI&L listing of station name changes since 1890. Both Guthrie and Peerless are listed as abandoned on that document. At one time, there was a station named Logan listed between Guthrie and Peerless.

Steve,

I've seen references to Logan, but there is no indication it still exists in that particular location in Indiana.  Today, Stemm is an unincorporated community.  Stemm is said to have been established as a switching station on the Monon Railroad.  Not sure exactly what that means.  There may have been some spurs around Stemm that led into some limestone operations.

The Wikipedia reference to Logan (in Lawrence County) is identical to Stemm in that it is also described as established as a switching station on the Monon Railroad.

They've got to be the same community that changed name for some reason.

Stemm first appeared on CIL ETT #55 (effective 04/27/29) with a car passing siding. It last appeared on ETT #73 superseded (02/25/45) still with a passing siding capacity of 72 cars. I did not look for when the capacity changed or to see if it was ever listed as an open station.
