Box Car USEX 8008
« on: April 03, 2014, 05:23:29 pm »
Found an interesting image on eBay recently.  It shows box car USEX 8008 with the following stencil message "WHEN EMPTY RETURN VIA REVERSE ROUTE TO MONON AGENT BLOOMINGTON INDIANA".

Any thoughts on this?

Very interesting.  I don't remember any rail cars with the USEX reporting marks, but my memory isn't all that great. I would suspect they might have been leased by RCA for exclusive use of shipping their TV's. I don't suppose the photo had any date on it.

What company had the USEX reporting marks?  That might help track down what was being shipped, and where.

Rick,

Sorry I left this out of my original message.  The photo was taken in Hartford, CT on 5/06/73.  Hope this helps.

The USEX reporting marks were among several used by the United States Railway Equipment Co. The only Official Railway Equipment Register I have is for April, 1976 and USEX 8008 is not listed in that issue.

No, it doesn't help much.  I believe RCA was still shipping tv's then.  About the only other possibility was refgrs shipped from GE, but they used mostly hi-cube boxcars, not the common 40 footers.

Steve,

I have the October, 1969 version of the The Official Railway Equipment Register and it indicates that the United States Railway Equipment Company (USEX) had 900-series and 7000-series box cars, but not 8000-series.

It appears that the USEX 8000-series box cars only existed sometime between 1969 and 1976.  Interesting mystery.

George,

The 1976 listing shows no cars of any kind with USEX reporting marks numbered in the 8000 series.
