All,
Someone recently posted some 17000 freight cars in consists on the steam era freight car list on yahoo. These cars were on the NYC line between Toledo Jct. Ohio and Collinwood Yard in Cleveland Ohio from 1939 to 1948. I pulled out the Monon cars for our enjoyment and are an interesting look at the Monon fleet at the time. Summary:
-Six 1-500 series steel cars, built 1947. One of these is carrying wheat.
-Six 3000 series single sheathed boxcars, built 1912. The last of which is October 1946. According to the diagrams they will be gone by 1948.
-Twelve 9000 series steel cars (the 9918 number must be a typo, they only went to 9449)
-Nine USRA gons and clones.
-Fourteen low-sided composite gons, 31800-32299 series
-Three 1925 40000 series composite twin hoppers.
-50 cars total
-25 empties
-7 of 25 boxcars carried Merchandise
-6 cars of metal products of some kind.
-Many of the empty gons are routed to Elkhart. Was there some industry there that would load a lot of gons? Crushed stone?
-No 41500 series 1940 hoppers.
