Nulton and Monon on the cover!
« on: September 19, 2016, 03:48:59 pm »
Wow!  Roger's reworked wooden trestle and a beautiful S scale Monon Alco diesel are on the COVER of the October Railroad Model Craftsman.  Roger's Fall scenery is just breathtaking.  Be sure and check out this gorgeous eight page how-to spread! Great job, Roger!

Chuck is not the only one. I loved the cover shot and the article. Almost makes me want to get back into modeling. Almost being the key word. Nice work.

Thanks, Mike.  Sorry guys, I don't know exactly where my photos were taken, other that southwest of Blmtn. in 1984.  It was before I decided to get into scale model railroading and when I was just considering the Monon as a prototype.

Attached (if it worked) is the other shot that RMC cut out.

Great modeling Roger.  You have no idea how prototypical that shot is.  You put the car(s) of limestone right ahead of the caboose so the slack could beat the poor conductor and flagman black and blue for the entire trip.  That's exactly how the Monon did it 50 years ago.  Hah,  / Ron

Thank you Kevin and Ron!  Ron, I'm not sure if you're funnin' me, but you guys realize that my layout is just a caricature of the real Monon.  There's not enough space, time or skill to even come close.  But we are having a great time operating the thing, and guys out here will swallow any lie that this "Monon expert" makes up to answer their questions <G>.
Thanks again, Roger

Roger, you were standing on Victor Pike, looking East. That is the IC branch to Victor-Oolitic Stone Co. crossing over, carefully now, Fluck Mill Rd. The Monon main was just beyond those trees.  Vern@G.

Vern,
Thank you, that's very helpful.  I'll have to check out the area on my maps: maybe it will jog memories of that trip back to Indiana so many years ago.  Too bad the article is already in print.  Next time, I'll check my facts with you guys!

The shot was great  Roger.  It's not bolts and nuts that matter, it's the feeling, and you've captured it.  I wasn't kidding about the cars of stone right ahead of the caboose.  When they were building Burns Harbor, they were using large blocks of stone for breakwater, and every day on #72 we'd have 25 or 30 loads of that stone on the rear end.  They made up #72 that way because it saved a long switch at Lafayette, but it sure was a bear to handle for 104 miles.  We hauled that stuff that way for about two years.  / Ron

Thank you, Ron.  I remember you saying that you used RS-2's in the quarries.  The switchers are just fanciful on my part to sell the story.  I'm trying again to attach another image that they didn't print.  It didn't get out to the Board last time I tried :>(
