Title: F3 B units
Post by: Chuck Stewart on August 21, 2013, 08:24:17 am
Another F3 question:  Monon had five (maybe six?) F3 B units…including 64C which was involved in the Ash Grove accident.  From photos, I can see 64C was painted in the gold and black freight colors.  What about units 61C, 62C, 63C and 65C?  Were they all painted in the freight colors?  I’ve been told that two of these units may have had steam generators?  Does anybody have info?

Chuck,

Here are some small images of 62C and 63C.  I believe you will find that all the F3C units were painted black and gold.  They were purchased to operate in freight service, but were also used from time to time in passenger service.

The Monon had one F-3B that was equipped with a steam generator, number 65C. The B-unit was orginally part of the EMD A-B-A F-3 demonstrator set numbered 754. The Monon acquired the three unit set in August, 1947. The two A-units became 85A & 85B.

Thank-you, George and Steve, for the much appreciated information and photos!  My next question was going to be did the Monon ever use the black and gold B units in passenger service and now I know!  Thanks, guys, and hope to see you in Lafayette.
