Photo of the K&IT roundhouse that appeared on eBay recently.
Did the Monon have its own freight yard in the Louisville area or did it use the K&IT yards or some other yard?

George, the Monon was 1/3 owner of the K&IT yards, and used it for their freight trains. The other 2/3 was owned by the B&O and Southern. The passenger trains, of course, ran through the K&IT yards down to 10th. and Broadway in downtown Louisville. / Ron

Ron,
Thanks for your reply. Did the Monon have locomotives permanently assigned to the K&IT yards or did they depend on K&IT locomotives to do the switching. I know that the K&IT had at least a dozen locomotives in service. I suspect it's possible that the Monon had one or more SW1s or NW2s available for this assignment. Over the years I haven't seen many photos of Monon switchers operating at the Youngtown yards. One photo I have seen is one of the Monon's FM units at the site.

The Monon didn't have any locomotives there assigned to work the K&IT yards. They did have the New Albany yard engine based there. During my years it was an SW1. When it was down, they would use a K&IT yard engine to replace it. I think in later years they leased a K&IT engine full time for the New Albany job so they wouldn't have to maintain an engine down there. / Ron

You may find the attached images of K&IT diesels of interest. I have more but got to head for the NQC in a few minutes. Bill Gaither and many, many other talents are on the program.
