This is an un-official survey. What type of car would you Monon N scale guys like to see done? There has been some preliminary work done on a 50' Insulated Boxcar, FGE, but nothing was finished on it.
What do you guys think, or would like to see made.
-
Would a new car come from Micro-Trains, or from some other supplier? I assume that to keep costs down it needs to be a car the the company has produced before with other road names.
-
The FGE insulated box was Micro Trains. There was an issue with the trucks and that seemed to deep six the project back then. We worked with Micro Train before, but I am not against working with other manufacturers. If you have time and would like to help research and develop a product, we would welcome the input.

I'd vote for a Monon trailer as in the attached photo. I know Atlas years ago sold trailers on flat cars, and Micro-Trains has produced 40' trailers like the one at
http://www.modeltrainstuff.com/PhotoDetails.asp?ShowDESC=N&ProductCode=MTL-45000030 (http://www.modeltrainstuff.com/PhotoDetails.asp?ShowDESC=N&ProductCode=MTL-45000030) . M-T has sold 40', 45' and 48' trailers.

How about a 3 or 4 car set of baggage, RPO, and a couple of coaches? I would even settle for that ugly B&G :-X paint scheme. (Look Ma - no emoticon!)

Note that the emoticon has appeared afater one day. Still shows up as a ":-X" here.

I like both suggestions - passenger set and a trailer :)

The Society and Stores will check into these suggestions. Finding a manufacturer that will produce in limited numbers, or having the correct prototype car to begin with is a major hang up. We should strive for accuracy whenever possible. My question to the N scalers is: is prototype accuracy that important in an N scale project? Case in point. The Insulated Box Cars FGE we considered did not have the right ends and trucks. Would that be a deal breaker for you N scale modelers?
-
At my experience and skill level, I would say no. But that's just me Tom.

Here is the artwork Max Foltz got from Micro-Trains on the Insulated Box Cars FGE. Maybe Chad knows what the issues were. What say you Chad?

I found an article in the August 2001 "The Hoosier Line" about the Monon 2000 series PS-1 box cars that were available from the store. I don't think a Monon 50 ft. box has ever been sold in N scale.
-
I was wondering about that. I have got some feelers out. I will ask about that too. Diid you just volunteer to serve on the committee?
-
Absolute newbie here (does this make my avatar read "Monon freeloader"?), but from my perspective (modeling Dearborn station trains circa 1956), I'd second passenger cars. I can't see Monon generating the kind of sales major manufacturers need to break even, but I wonder if a manufacturer of passenger car sides, like Union Station Products, M&R or Brass Car sides might not be talked into doing the Monon rebuilt hospital cars. Also strikes me as possible that as more passenger cars become available from Microtrains and Wheels of Time, some of these heavyweights might be close enough (haven't had the opportunity to study Monon heavyweights) for someone to consider doing a custom painted batch for Monon, as has been done with freight cars in the past.

Hi Tom
How about accurate N scale decals==ie Like Mont Switzers HO decal sets in N Scale.
I have a few of his N scale offerings and they are brilliant.
Also how about TOFC'c in N scale
Thanks From Down Under

Howdy Greg
Not to tip my hand, but we are working with Micro Trains on a couple of projects. One is a flat car with trailer. Hope to have more information in the coming months. As for decals, will ponder that too.
-
Some decals would be good. Maybe they're already available - not sure. I just finished putting two decoders in a Bachmann N Scale 2 8 0 - normal decoder is a in the boiler - Digitrax DZ125 and a Sound Decoder in the tender - SFX004. So the next thing I need to do is relabel it for Monon...
-
Mont Switzer does have N scale decal sets Don. I am not sure what is available, but he has a listing at www.greatdecals.com (http://www.greatdecals.com). Might contact him and see what he has. Greg Hiley obtained some of his N scale sets, so maybe he will comment.

Thanks Tom. I'd like to hear from others who may have used them. I'll check out the site later.

I have used some of Mont's N scale decals with no problems that were caused by the decals.

Don
I have used a variety of Mont Switzers decals to do various cars including some of his black decals for re doing MT reefers
