Title: 1800-Era Maps

The two attached maps were being sold on eBay recently.  The Louisville map, dated 1886, shows no K&IT, but has some interesting names on it.

The Salem map was undated.

That Louisville map shows the LNA&C's connection at Vincennes St. with the PRR predecessor JM&I which was MONON's original direct connection into Louisville via that bridge seen on the far right, I think.  The K&IT and its bridge came later.

The Salem map reminds me of something that is at least unusual, if not unique: The Monon came into Salem from the north, regardless of which way the trains were running railroad-wise.

Mark's comment about the compass direction vs "Railroad' direction reminds me of a problem I took into account on the schematic sketches in the Tour Guidebooks. Particularly it was done when I started using a "home CAD" program to make the sketches starting with the 2000 Tour Guidebooks. Every sketch has at least two "North Arrows" one labeled Railroad (along with the copyright notice) and one or more others labeled Compass North with a note indicating its general location where it applies.
Since the main line had been straightened" out only one RR North was needed. The compass North arrows are at the angle to the centerline at the location(s). For instance Ellettsville has three as it 's on an "S" curve.
