Title: New Photos of The Barriger Collection Posted
Post by: Mike Aufderheide on November 08, 2014, 05:51:45 pm
All,

Some new photos were posted from the Barriger Collection at the St. Louis Merchantile Library.  You have to cull through them to find the Monon shots.  They are asking people to identify these shots if possible.  See:

http://www.flickr.com/barrigerlibrary

Once again they have put up photos that have not been seen before.  Very cool!

Mike, thanks for pointing these out.  Fun to explore!
I saw pictures taken at Bedford, French Lick, and Lafayette.
There are others I can't identify.

Very frustrating to view these photos for several reasons.  First, they are way to small to see any details, especially on the steam photos.  Second, some of the Monon shots are obvious, but it's easy to miss many of them unless you have an expert's knowledge of the Monon (which I don't).

Anyone get a good set of Monon shots from the first release of the Barriger photos?  Are they available to Society members?

George and all,

Agreed that it is frustrating. Hopefully if the members of this list can help them ID the photos they will move them into the Monon directory. As was said many of the Monon shots are obvious because of a location or diesel paint scheme.  These are a few photos that I think are Monon but not sure:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/barrigerlibrary/15108688163/

By the by, each photo has three symbols in the lower right hand corner of the web page:  a star, an arrow pointing right and an arrow pointing down .  If you click on the arrow pointing down you can get larger sizes for many of the pictures.

Regards,

George - are you talking about the thumbnails on the site? I grabbed them and they are all mostly 2000x1400 or larger.

I found a Monon passenger car under the shed at Dearborn:

Mysterious under there!  Sorry i missed it.

All the one picture looks like Clear Creek. Headed down the Smithville line.

The photo that starts with the number 1510 looks like Indianapolis Union Station.

Is this shot in Bedford?

Interesting picture with a wood caboose used as a rider and a big 570 class engine on a local.  Also a flat car with tanks on it a few cars back.

Yes, that photo was taken in Bedford. There is a 2nd shot of the same train further back in town.

I believe you are correct JD..The switch showing was to a quarry line in the opposite direction.

Sorry guys, wrong location.  That picture was shot looking north at the I.C. interchange north of Bloomington on Hunter's hill.  The train is SB.  / Ron

Mike, how did you get the photos to download large and savable?  Like George, all I'm getting are small sizes and I cant even save any of those.  But your download of that Bedford steam street shot is big and clear and detailed, and I had no trouble at all saving it.

Tim,

Yah, their system is not intuitive at all.  Each photo has three symbols in the lower right hand corner of the web page:  a star, an arrow pointing right and an arrow pointing down .  If you click on the arrow pointing down you can get larger sizes for many of the pictures.  I usually click the the "see all sizes" one that lets you see them without downloading them. Some are at huge resolutions, fun to see all the details.
