Title: Orleans Derailment
Post by: George Lortz on June 23, 2015, 02:05:28 pm
The attached photo is Barriger photo #719.  The caption reads "Derailment; Orleans, IN; 6/21/51; John Barriger photo #719".

Are there any records as to which locomotive this is?

Here's a photo of 65 in Bedford before it got an A or B designation.

The date of the "side-swipe" at Orleans by Train #73 was 6-18-51.  Here's a scan of an investigator's diagram detailing the circumstances.

We have numerous pictures of this wreck in the archives.  The fireman, "Button" Shanks, who was also a promoted engineer, lost an eye in the wreck and could only work as a fireman after that.  He finished his career on the Bedford yard job.  / Ron

David 'Button' Shanks' wife Edith, now long since deceased, was a good friend of my mother. The Shanks' lived in Mitchell in their later years.
