The Empire Quarry, 2006. These pictures where taken when Justin Asbery, Joe Land and I took the Deadeye Tour of quarries around Bedford and the Monon Stone district. During our visit, we were witness to how Deadeye got his nickname. To stand up on the top and look out over that hole was awesome. All the stone for the Empire State Building in New York City was quarried there. South of this hole, Indiana Limestone had opened another hole to quarry stone for the new Yankee Stadium.

Tom, I was at this location a month ago, stand where you were when you took this picture. Indiana Limestone is getting very close to pushing waste stone into this historic quarry. I hope it never happens but they are only a few feet way.

That would indeed be a shame, but sometimes you just can't stop progress.

Been thinking about what you said Pete. If I recall, back when Steve showed us Empire, the new hole was way off in the distance, or so it seemed. Indiana Limestone must be doing well, if they are close to Empire and thinking about filling it.

You have to admit it, this was the most memorable part of the trip! ;D

No kidding. Amazing how gun shots into a quarry hole will echo and summon law enforcement. I still remember the one officer's words. "It's Stafford. Should have figured."
-
Where exactly is the Empire Quarry located?

Empire Quarry marked on GE image.

Since Joe posted the map/ photo, I will add that it is on Indiana Limestone property.

An older view of the Empire quarry.
Pedigo may have posted this on the old listserv a while back.

Advertisements of the day and all the stone came from the Empire Quarry, near Bedford.

Has anyone ever heard how much weight all this stone added up to ? Must have had to go pretty deep for the footers. Vic
