Title: C628 vs SD-50
Post by: George Lortz on February 10, 2016, 04:25:14 pm
Conrail eventually owned the former-Monon C628s before they were scrapped.  The CR C628s were numbered 6729 - 6737.  Unfortunately, CR later had a set of SD-50s that were numbered the same.  Both locomotives were six-axle.

When looking at a photo of a CR locomotive in this numbering scheme, how do tell whether it is a C628 or an SD-50?

This is an SD50.

Justin,

Thanks.  I think the SD-50s all have a panel on the side that sticks out like your photo shows.  Do you have any idea what these locomotives are?

The two with conventional cabs (Spartan) are SD50's which were later rebuilt into SD40E's by NS. The other two with wide cabs are SD60I's.
