Post by: Rick Berg on February 26, 2012, 09:29:05 pm
Where is this bridge located at?

Anyone know the coordinates?

That's the middle Salt Creek bridge Rick, south of Guthrie at MP 239.4.  There was also a north and south Salt Creek bridges, but this was the only thru truss down there.  I've posted a Google Earth image with the place marked.  It was about 0.8 miles north of Peerless.  At least I hope it's the right place.  Maybe Steve Stafford can confirm it.  / Ron

Thanks Ron
Gonna go change the bridge type in the train sim.

OK, but check the place I marked to make sure.  Make it narrow.  There was only about 6" clearance on each side of the gun mounts.  If you already  got the one at Mill Creek north of Wallace Jct., this one was the same width, and maybe even identical overall.  / Ron

That bridge is where fireman Paul Stewart got killed.  Stuck his head out the back side door of an F3 early one morning, and got it taken off.  / Ron

I reduced the first image on my computer screen until the rails at the abutment matched my official NMRA HO-scale track and clearance gauge.  This bridge's clearances were WAY out of compliance with NMRA standards!

Vic, the other two Salt Creek bridges were the deck-girder type.  They were both visible from nearby public roads, but the middle bridge wasn't, which is why generally only the train crews knew about it.

Tim, I'll bet the Monon's Chief Engineer probably didn't know that, or maybe knew it and just ignored it....  / Ron

Thanks Tim, I have seen the bridges along the stone railway south of Bedford or at least some of them but I haven't got around to looking on the north side yet. One of these days I will take a little time and wander around up there. Vic
