ROMNEY, Ind. (WLFI) - A controlled burn became unmanageable Sunday afternoon near Romney, causing damage to a CSX railroad line, according to Randolph Township Assistant Fire Chief Mike Kyger.
Multiple fire agencies were called to a fire off of County Road 1150 South, just southwest of Romney in Tippecanoe County, just before 5 p.m. Sunday.
Kyger said the owners of the property had torn down a silo, and were cleaning up by burning the wood that had been part of the structure. The wind shifted, and the entire pile of rubble caught fire.
The structure was right next to a CSX Railroad line, and some of the railroad ties caught on fire as well, Kyger said. The railroad line had to be shut down, and CSX will have to come out to inspect the tracks to see if further repairs are needed.
Firefighters from West Point, Randolph Township, Wea Township and Morgan Township assisted in fighting the fire. No one was injured in the incident.

Good thing it was not crop harvesting time up there. Dry corn, wheat, soybeans, hay and straw field fires are fast and furious.
-
We looked at that property when we were looking for a place for WHQ.
The buildings were in bad shape and the society couldn't afford to build.
It does have a CSX siding that might have been used to move our rolling stock.

Here is video of the fire ... the "best" (if you want to call it that) video is at the end:

I can't even begin to imagine how many photos I took with that elevator in the background from circa 1986-2010. Hundreds.

Great line..."They are going to come out and inspect the tracks before the turn the trains back on." Made me laugh. I can picture some giant at Lafayette with his hand on a transformer...LOL. Let get these trains back on.

This fire stopped the trains but did not have much effect on the tracks them self. They just put a slow order on it.
A few pick after ward.

Nice pictures Jim. I assume the place was not being used anymore. Still looks so barren.

No, they were in the process of taking it down. This is the same one you have on your web site. Only it did not look near that good before the fire.
