What was the earliest that the nomanclature "Monon Route" came into use after the LNA&C 's acquisition in 1883, in the way of paperwork and other evidenses?

David, what do you mean about the LNA&C's acquisition in 1883?  As far as "Monon Route" is concerned, I have a LNA&C employee's timetable from 1881, and not only does it not mention the "Monon Route", Sharon's and Cookie's garden spot of the world was still called Bradford on this timetable.  / Ron

The last L.N.A.&C Employee Timetable (#28) does NOT mention "Monon Route. Its successor, CI&L Timetable #1 (Effective 5:00 am November 28, 1897), has "MONON ROUTE" in bold letters on its cover beneath Chicago Indianaolis & Louisville Ry. Co. in larger type.

There also exists  a photocopy of a public timetable dated August, 1897 with MONON ROUTE in the lozenge herald with Chicago, Indianapolis & Louisville Ry. Co. under it in smaller letters.

According to Hilton, in Monon Route (pg 51) the L.N.A.&C. first used the name (Monon Route) on a US Map issued in November 1882.

Ron,

I meant acquisition/merger with the Air Line.  Had a senior moment.  The 1882 date Bob mentioned puts the use of "Monon Route" right up to the Air Line merger in 1883.

That was what confusd me.  Dave Ritenour's excellent timeline places the date the CIAL (Chicago & Indianapolis Air Line) merged into LNA&C as December 15, 1881.  Is this incorrect?  / Ron

Myself I would take the date (Month, day and year) over material that was published "sometime" the following year.

It sees like we have here the problem of calling the same thing by different names. Sort of like is it a PawPaw or Indiana Banana? Or the same way for different item of produce is it a Musk Melon or Cantaloupe?

The difference between the date of something happening and the use of it "sometime"in the next year for what was likely advertising material.

Along this line I recall a sign posted on my kollech bulletin board: "Accuracy is our watchword, we never make misteaks".

I found the 2-1-1883 date in Hilton, p. 47.  Where is Dave's Timeline?  On the MRHTS web site?

I have some late-1800's LNA&C "paper" and the earliest piece displaying "Monon" or "Monon Route" is the attached, a bill of lading for moving a carload of corn from Brookston to Lafayette, dated March 20, 1894.  Note that this is about 3 years prior to the road's reorg into the CI&L.

More interesting to me is when "The Hoosier Line" first made its appearance as a slogan.  The earliest evidence I've seen is its appearance on the carbody of H10-44 #18 in November 1946.  Since John W. Barriger had signed on as President May 1st of that same year, was the THL slogan his idea, or had it been considered before that?

The attached image shows the New Albany pass/frt depot in 1897.  Look in the lower left part of the structure
and it says "Monon Route".  When this was added is of interest.  By this date Zier stove was using all or a part
of the building as most activity was going across the K&I.  You may have a copy of this photo if you have The Monon
Railroad in So. Indiana.

This is the oldest pass that I have a scan of (I don't have the actual pass)
that has the words "Monon Route" on it.  From 1884.
Has anyone seen an earlier one that says "Monon Route"?

I have several LNA&C passes, and the earliest I have displaying "Monon Route" is this one from 1893.
