Train 72 leaving McDoel with 578 on the head end.
On the back of the picture is says Walter Geiger Eng. March -14 but the year is unreadable.
When was 578 put into service and when was it retired ?

Pete, could you post the picture again? It's awfully small....... / Ron
-
Yes Pete,
I'm having trouble seeing it too.
-
I can't see it at ALL.
But according to Hilton, Class J4 #578 was built in October, 1929 and sold in June, 1948 to the TA&G. The J4's were MONON's last new steam locomotives, powerful brutes equipped with steam boosters under their tenders. If #578 has "MONON" centered on the tender side, it's probably a pre-war photo. If she does NOT have a Worthington Feedwater Heater (rectangular box atop the smokebox ahead of the stack) or a "switcher" (step) pilot, it is probably early 1930's. If the "MONON" is painted high up on the tender side with a large "578" centered on the side, it is a late- or post-war photo.

Tim, you need a better computor or a bigger screen. Steve and I can see it but it's really, really small. Could you post a bigger one Pete? / Ron
-
Ron, I think the further away from Bloomington you are the photo gets smaller.
-
If it left Mar. 14, it should have been in Laf. by now. That's a little further North.
-
Steve's right.................In Lafayette I don't see a thing

oops, man you guys are ruthless. I would send it now but the electronic file is at my office...and I already passed along the original to Ron today......so I can't scan it here to save face. :(
-
Yea, right..... blame it on the old guy. LOL. If I knew which one it was, I'd scan it and post it, but I don't know which one you're talking about. Oh well, suprise us tomorrow. / R

Very Presidential, stall and then blame someone else.

ok, it's the one with the steam locomotive 578 sitting at the semaphore with the McDoel Mile Marker number on the semaphore mast. It is one of the photo's I had in the box I gave you from Mrs. Ferguson. 8x10 I think it was
