Title: Distant train horns; music to my ears
Post by: Joe Land on August 25, 2012, 10:01:50 pm
As Sandy and I were taking our morning walk, I heard the distant train horns of the Georgia Northeastern as the train traveled from Holly Springs to Canton. The air must have been just right to carry the sound several miles in our direction. Although distant, those horns were music to my ears.

I agree Joe.   Growing up "in the middle of the tracks" I developed a love of the sound of a locomotive.  We learned to know the engineer by the way he handled the horn.  Cookie had a good friend that was an engineer for Amtrak for a while and we all knew when Joe D'Andre was at the helm as Amtrak went thru Monon.  I still stop and listen when I hear a train.

I grew up near the (former) Nickleplate line that goes across Anthony Blvd In Fort Wayne, IN.  Still doesn't seem right on summer nights to not hear trains blowing for that crossing in the distance all night.
