Curiosity has got me.  Realize it is 35 years post-photo, but wondering the reason the L & N unit is on the lead?  Did that tired old Amtrak E unit give it up?

wow, that Amtrak E unit looks terrible.  Amtrak wasn't pretty in the late 1970s...

I remember seeing one of the Amtraks come through and the locomotive looked like it wouldn't finish the trip. Yes, back then they looked really bad.

Obviously this one didn't finish the trip or they wouldn't have put an L&N engine on the head end.  LOL,  / Ron
