Title: stock cars
Post by: Ken Weller on November 24, 2012, 11:48:54 pm
What - if any - stockcars were seen on the Monon during the diesel era?
The only indication I have seen is a picture taken in Bloomington in 1947; see attached (lower right hand corner) showing an I-GN stock car.  Thanks.

According to the Annual Report counts of cars there were 15 CI&L stock cars from December 31, 1943 until 1945 when 14 were retired. The last one was retired in 1947.

The January, 1943, Official Railway Equipment Register (OER) shows the CI&L had 26 stock cars(SM) with steel underframes numbered 6200-6299, 80,000 Capy. Note that 11 were reported as being retired during 1942.

The same AR source shows 4 diesel switchers starting in 1942 until 1946 when 10 freight diesel freight locos were added to the roster. The diesel locomotives first tonnage ratings were in CI&L Employee timetable #79 effective March 2, 1947 as a note "Division Trainmaster will establish tonnage ratings for diesel locomotives. The first with tonnage numbers was CI&L #82 effective September 28, 1947.

This does not account for forgin line (e.g. I_GN in the picture) handled by diesel power.

Hope this helps.
