Title: "Tippecanoe" at Crawfordsville
Post by: Tim T Swan on December 09, 2012, 05:00:57 pm
Attached is a recent photo off the Classic Trains website, purporting to be a 1948 shot of the Tippecanoe at Crawfordsville.  Of course the Tippecanoe was in Indy train and so never saw C'ville, so if it's there, the train must be the Thoroughbred.  But can somebody confirm that it is indeed Crawfordsville?  1948 looks right--above the lead unit you can see the top of the water column still in place.  Most were remvoed from late 1948 into 1949.

Tim, I'm not 100% sure, but I'm reasonably sure it's Crawfordsville.  I've not seen this particular photo before.  / Ron

That is a good picture where ever it is.

Is it possible that the Tip was detouring  for some reason ? Vic

Was Delphi bridge replaced over this time period?

Weren't the HW Baggage only on the Louisville trains at this time? It looks to be mid-afternoon due to the sun, could this be the NB from Louisville?

Edit: According to the 1948 timetable it would be it there around 4 PM.

Shadows can tell a whole lot, but Rick might also be on to something. It may have been a train that was re-directed because of work or an accident. Now we just need a time machine to uncover the circumstances. I must also add that it is indeed a great photo. Thanks for posting it Tim.

If it was a detour, it would be an extra, displaying white flags or running on another train's schedule (no flags) or a section of another train (green flags) unless it was the last section (no flags).  I'll let Ron or Rick D. jump in on this one.  I didn't work out there, so I'm just guessing.

Does anyone recognize the building in the background? It may be a link to the location/time frame.

Just to muddy the waters some more:

1) If it was #11 or#12 detouring, why would it be unloading/loading mail at Crawfordsville?

 2) Why would it be detouring south of Lafayette. Wouldn't a detour more likelly be Monon to Lafayete Junction and NKP to Frankfort (or reverse).
Wabash between Delphi and Lafayette wouldn't be as easy to get thru the interchange trackage at Junction.

Good points fellows.  If it was a detour from Ames, it would almost certainly be carrying white flags for an extra, and it wouldn't be unloading baggage at Crawfordsville.  It's almost certainly #6 from Louisville.

So what we are seeing is #6 at CRW with the original Tippecanoe F3 engines on the point, right?

The Tippecanoe had its own engines?  I thought they just used the power that was available.

Yes they did, but the first passenger set has the script under Monon and the gold pin strips like the picture which was used on the INDY train. Someone correct me if I am wrong here.

You're not wrong Rick, but here we go again assuming things that were not necessarily correct.  When we say a certain set of power was used on a certain train, that may have been true part of the time, maybe most of the time, but certainly not all the time.  That power had to have been circulated back to Lafayette periodically for inspections, and other power used on those trains during the absence of the regular power, and the power was worked back to Lafayette, on either freight or passenger trains, and not run back lite.  Power on the railroad was always in flux due to the requirements of the service, and to say such and such power was always used on such and such train is simply not accurate.  Operating conditions were always changing, and motive power requirements changed with the operating conditions.  / Ron

The first four F3 A-A sets, #'s 81-84, were all identical paintwise.  All originally had the gold pinstripes and the script THL's running beneath the large MONON's on the carbody sides.  The Indy trains also almost always had the ex-USA hospital car RPO's #11 or 12 on the head end.  These plus no white flags plus lots of mail indicate this is no detour.  IF it's Crawfordsville.

Note that both the 1948 and 1959 photos show a tall stack in the background.  I'm satisfied it is C'ville.

I agree Tim, it's Crawfordsville and it's Train #6.  However, don't ever believe that a lack of white flags can't be a detour train.  I've run several detour trains as the second section of a regular train, and as such didn't carry any signals (flags).  The train ahead though, which was the "real" scheduled train, would have been carrying green signals (flags).  / Ron

Sure looks like Crawfordsville to me.  I think they have the right town and the wrong train name.  Didn't the Tippecanoe and Hoosier ran with the same equipment.  The Hooser down to Indy became the Tippecanoe to Chicago and visa versa.  They usually had RPO cars 11 and 12 in the consist.

Having grown up in C'ville I would say that surely looks like the north end of the platform at Crawfordsville, and the building in the background is still there today.
