Title: Surely at Shops

I happened across this while googling around the internet. There was no mention of the photographer.  Vern @ G.

Vern,

Thanks for sharing this.  I think that is a Monon container car at the immediate left.  Too bad we can't see the lettering.  Photos of the container cars are hard to find.

BTW, stop calling us Shirley!!

George and all, that's a Dick Fontaine photo, but I can't figure out why it never made his CD's, or never made it into the database??  No doubt floating around somewhere in cyberspace.  / Ron

What are they burning?  Is that for hot rivets?  It looks like they are replacing a truck, can anybody tell me what is going on here with more detail?

Also note the rainbow of Monon boxcars, everything from red to almost charcoal grey.

John, it was taken in January 1969, so they may have started a trash fire to keep warm.  They've rolled the truck out from under the gon, and replaced a set of wheels on it.  You can see the new wheels and axle on the right.  They would have then rolled it back under the car, and hooked the brake system back up.  / Ron

AH, the knowledge of a rip track worker--- they could have burned journal box waste for more heat, but the black smoke came off that in little black curly thingies.
