Right Of Way / New Lake States folder: Metra donated C&WI photos
« Last Post by Eric Reinert on May 07, 2026, 04:43:54 pm »
A relatively new folder has been archived on this wonderful site. Evidently Metra has donated the C&WI photos from their archives of the C&WI R-O-W photos in Chicago in the 1900-1901 era. This is pre-elevation era stuff that includes some Monon specific content as well. Including the following:

https://www.lakestatesarchive.org/Metra-CWI-Collection/i-7sWmwJt/A

CI&L Boxcar 6514 on C&WI near 65th St. Chicago- 1900

https://www.lakestatesarchive.org/Metra-CWI-Collection/i-B8Zb3wz/A

C&WI track and ROW looking south at 48th St. toward Monon roundhouse and engine terminal! - 1900

https://www.lakestatesarchive.org/Metra-CWI-Collection/i-2NKg6Qm/A

Looking East at 49th Place toward Monon Roundhouse- Chicago 1900

So much to pore over here, as none of this exists today. These shots even predate Comiskey Park that would be built at 35th St.

Thanks, Vern.  So it's Houck not Houk and NYC not Monon.

That is "Houck" road in Greencastle under the old NYC double track. Just to the East of the new connection.

Rolling Stock / Re: Early 1900’s Caboose photo

The cynic in me has to ask if maybe this is an A.I. generated photo. At least the "Monon Route" logos, etc. Just seems mighty fishy- The pixelation (so it has been AI enhanced at least), the fact I've never even heard of a caboose of this style, and the lack of documentation of this number scheme for cabooses. This is too weird. I'm not passing judgement totally, but I really, really have to wonder if this is a legit Monon photo.

That is up by Fort Wayne, so not Monon.

Thanks, Lee.

These former-Monon hoppers moved through Cincinnati for several decades after the Monon was gone, sometimes renumbered with  CSXT or SBD numbering.

Miscellaneous / Houk Road Overpass

I recently found this attached image on eBay.  It stated that it was a CSX bridge over Houk Road but didn't give the location in Indiana.  Is this a former-Monon overpass and if so, where is it?

Passenger Trains / Re: YouTube video: Reflections of American railroading

Thanks for the heads-up on this, Chuck.  It seems that the Monon appeared in a number of railroad films.  It would be ideal if we could take all these small clips of Monon-related video and splice them all together into one large one.  Probably not possible, but it would make a great show.
