ICC Valuation Maps
« on: March 26, 2015, 06:39:14 am »
Does the historical society have copies of the valuation maps that where made around World War I?  I just found out about their existence and, they seem like a they would be a great resource.  If you are unfamiliar with them, this link provides more information about them:

Steve:

The answer to your question is partly Yes. We do not have all of the plans. Also they have not been inventoried. By the way "correct" name in Valuation Plans.

Part of the problem is that they are 24"x 48" plan sheets each covering about 4 Miles (@1"=400'). There are also Station plans at 1"=100 and/or1" = 50'. Several are known to be missing from the collection. There are the ORIGINAL tracings (with Emboss sealed by a Notary Public) of the entire B&B Branch. In addition is a set of ink-on-linen tracings of the C&WV which was inventoried separately by that company before it was acquired by the CI&L.

Also there exists a strip map (accordion folded) from prints made from updated tracings (24" x 48") about 1948 from the lines that were active at that time. These strip plan sheets were made by cutting prints into about an 8" strip along the centerline residing in one of the plan drawers at WHQ.  Missing are the French Lick branch and the Main Line Branch Clear Creek to Harrodsburg. I made a photo copy on letter size sheets for myself which resides in 7 plus three ring binders on a shelf above my computer for reference in answering questions from the membership.

In addition most of the written Blue Print inventory (with no plans) is in the Indiana Division of the State Library in Indianapolis. I have made a hand written copy of some of the data before laptops became affordable. In fact most of the railroads crossing Indiana have their corresponding Val Inventory stored there.  e.g. only the parts in Indiana of The New York Central; CCC&StL Etc. are in the same collection (Slightly different Dewey Decimal Number (625.xxx))

Thanks for the info.  Are those located at the Salem Depot?  Can they be viewed there?

Thanks,

Steve

Yes the plans are at WHQ (AKA Salem Depot). The other data is in the Indiana State Library where copies might be made depending on their regulations.

You will need someone familiar with the files at WHQ to work with you there  to view them. They can be copied or scanned there.
