When Ames Tower Was A Tower

There's an old saying that even a blind dog will find a bone once in a while.  Well, this old dog found one today, and a special one.  A gentleman from Gosport, who had been an operator on the P&E, brought an extremely rare photo over for me to scan, a photo of Ames tower when it was still a two story tower.  It had been an actual tower until about 1950, when a Monon train derailed and a coal hopper went through it and tore it down.  Apparently the upper floor was not too badly damaged because the operator working there rode it to the ground unhurt, and after the wreck was cleared, they set it on a new foundation and it served until the end of the Monon, still known as Ames "tower".

Thanks to Mr. Dale Hunt, retired P&E operator, for sharing this rare picture with us.  He was not on duty at Ames that shift, but he was later called in to work, and he remembers sitting outside, on a chair, with a telegraph key in his lap, copying train orders on a clipboard, while a another P&E man held a flashlight for him to work by.  Great picture, and a great story.  / Ron

Ron,
Great pic of the tower and the history.  I greatly appreciate it since I am modeling Ames in the late '40's, and only have a small image of it before the wreck.  The model I have is serving as a stand in and will someday be replaced with a scratchbuilt one.  Best to you Ron.

Thanks Roger.  Glad it will be of use to you.  I was surprised by how tall the darned thing was.  The operator working there must have had quite a ride.  Dale said they checked the guy out and he was back to work the next day.  / Ron

Still, that had to have been a really awesome ride. Bet he needed a change of shorts.

No doubt about it.....  Hope one day to find some photos of this derailment.  There have to be some around Crawfordsville someplace.  / Ron

Got any friends at the Crawfordsville Library, or local historical Society? That is where I always go. Sometime they can dial you in to good photos, or sources that may have them.

Or, send Steve Long on a research mission? LOL.

No, but I do need to make a trip to the libraries and historical societies at both Crawfordsville and Greencastle.  Been planning to and just haven't gotten around to it yet.  Busy, busy, busy,  / Ron
