Late Monon/L&N Stone trains
« on: January 11, 2013, 09:54:03 am »
How much stone traffic was left in the later days of the Monon and the early L&N years?  Were there still enough quarries and/or mills still in operation that would see a dedicated stone local train out of McDoel?

By the late Monon/early L&N days the stone traffic was dwindling down to a mere trickle.  Some of it was quarry to mill movements, not much revenue.  This was south of McDoel.  I don't remember any stone trains north of McDoel after the merger, but by that time the yard limits may have been moved north enough that the McDoel yard engine could switch Hunters Valley.

I know that at least as late as 1977 the L&N still work the stone trackage in Hunters. We left Bloomington in the fall of 1977 so I cannot say how long after that the business continued.
