The General Motors plant in Bedford, Indiana will support production of two new engines and other auto parts, GM announced Thursday.
GM says it's investing around $332 million in four manufacturing sites to build more fuel-efficient engines and transmissions. In addition to Bedford, plants in Flint and Bay City, Michigan, and Toledo, Ohio, will also produce the new designs, which include a new Ecotec small gas engine, a new V6 engine, 8-speed transmission, and tooling for an existing 6-speed transmission.
GM will also invest an additional $46 million in two powertrain plants in Michigan.
Combined, GM says the two investments will retain about 1,650 jobs at the six facilities.
Specifically, Bedford Castings will get $29.4 million, including $19 million to produce components for the small gas engine and $10.4 million to produce components for the new 8-speed and existing 6-speed transmissions.
The Ecotec gasoline engine is designed to offer better performance, improved fuel economy and reduced carbon dioxide emissions. The 8-speed automatic transmission will assist in improved fuel economy and performance.
Since 2009, GM says its investments of more than $8.5 billion in its U.S. operations - $1.2 billion so far in 2013 - have created or retained more than 24,700 jobs.
