Active Monon Tracks as of 2015
« on: March 01, 2015, 11:19:39 am »
What former Monon tracks are still being used?  I know the Pillsbury plant in New Albany will be closing this year, and I can't imagine CSX will keep the track active once the plant closes.  It got me wondering what old Monon track is still in use.

If CSX abandons the track in New Albany (haven't heard anything that says they are), I'm sure the city will want to remove the bridge that crosses over Grant Line road near the old yard.  It's a semi-annual tradition for a truck to get stuck under it.

Is the second sub track still active from Monon down to the plastics plant north of Monticello?

Mike, I thought all that track between Monon and Monticello was abandoned and taken up? There was some of the old Indy line east of the diamond where some tank cars were stored.

I thought so too Tom, but I just checked the Google Earth imagery from September 2013, and at that time it shows still being in all the way to Monticello.  As information I've attached an undated PDF that shows railroad abandonments in Indiana, but this would have been earlier than we're talking about.  Incidentally, some of the Monon information is listed under L&N, and some of it under CSX.  / Ron

I picked up the 2015 Indiana transportation map while in Bloomington for a funeral earlier this week - the InDOT map still shows the rail line from Monon to Monticello - but they have been known to be wrong before!

Haven't been to Monon for quite a while...
