The Matthews Mansion. Home of John Matthews 1806-1883. Founder Matthews Stone Company. Picture is from the early 1900's.  -Monroe County Library Collection-

The former Matthews Mansion in 2008. This house was also known as the McNeely Mansion.  The front gate of the Bybee Stone Company, next to the Monon mainline at Elletsville and Adams. Bybee was formerly Matthews Brothers Stone Company, the McNeely Stone Company. All of the stone to repair the Pentagon after the 9-11 attack came from Bybee.

There have been reports that it is haunted. I have read several accounts of investigations, but a couple of paranormal investigation groups. I believe it is listed on one of the Haunted Indiana sites. I just think the house look so cool. The way it sits on top of the hill and overlooks the stone company makes it look impressive. One has to wonder if people working in the plant felt like they were always being watched?

The weekend after the 2005 Convention, I spent a day with Ron Marquardt seeing places they could not show us on the bus tour. One of the first places was Adams and as we approached, I caught sight of that house. It had that really creepy look, but at the same time very classic. That started me researching the history of the house. After hearing rumors, I checked with some web sites: http://www.angelfire.com/theforce/haunted/hauntedplacesofindiana.htm
http://www.theshadowlands.net/places/indiana.htm

At both sites, there is mention of Matthews Mansion.....BOO!  On a personal note: If you are in the Spencer area, Marquardt's Monon Tours are a must experience. Ron showed me the where things were at. To drive down the old ROW at Gosport was great. Very nice hospitality too.
