M.O. W. Equipment
« on: October 30, 2012, 09:34:46 pm »
Does anyone remember the old "weed burning" machines. Growing up as a kid in Paoli every summer we looked forward to seeing this huge yellow machine spouting fire. They were extremely loud.  I assume that this was leased or rented equipment. I have no pictures just the memories.  I think there use was finally curtailed because of starting brush fires along the tracks in addition to killing the weeks.

It was not leased equipment.  It belonged to the Monon.  The local section crew would always follow the weed burner on their motor car to put out any fires, either along the right of way, or on the ties.  I think it's number was WB-95 (or 98)

Rick,

Thanks for the info.  I have wondered about this equipment for years.  I wish I had taken pictures.

I am pretty sure there is a photo of the weed burner on one of Cookie's CDs.   I can't look for it right now.  (I'm getting ready for big Halloween party.)  Maybe Ron could post it for me.

Vic,  I'm not Ron but I can tell you that these photos were all taken in beautiful down town Monon about 3 blocks from my home.
