« on: January 19, 2013, 09:53:21 am »
Today's Lafayette JC contains the obituary of Byrns E. "Petey" Moore, Jr.  Petey was a northend engineer on the Monon.  I spoke to him 3 or 4 years ago when he provided me with a lot of information on Monon crew.   He was a nice man.

Byrns E. Moore Jr., 83

Byrns. E. Moore Jr., "Junior", "Pete", 83, Lafayette, passed away at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, surrounded by his family, on Jan. 16, 2013. Born Jan. 1, 1930, in Lafayette, to the late Byrns. E. Moore and Louise Halsema Moore.

He was a 1948 grad of Lafayette Jeff. H.S. He joined the Army in 1951 to 1953. He married Beverly Egelhoff on July 13, 1953, and she survives.

He retired after 44 years from the Old Monon Rail Road in 1992. He was a member of the Old Rails Brotherhood. He was a wonderful woodworker, enjoyed gardening and his children and grandchildren. He loved to sing, "Here comes Miss America" to a special niece and he loved Fog Horn Leg Horn. He was a big kid at heart.

He is survived by his children; Ruth Ann Scott (Randy), Debbie Gaddis (Jim), Bill and Ed. Also by 6 Grandchildren; and 4 Great-grandchildren. His siblings, Deloris Goris, James (Vange), Donald (Marilyn), Marilyn Hammelman, Betty Lou Johns (John); many nieces and nephews. I always wondered what his real name was.  He was always called Petey on the railroad.  He was a good man to work with and a good engineer.

Here's a picture of Petey taken in South Hammond many years ago.  He's second from the right with the white hat on.  Petey was a very nice fellow, and I always enjoyed being around him.

"Petey" was one of my favorite engineers back in the day as a youngster growing up in the Nora-Carmel area. He would always throw off his train orders as he passed. I was fortunate to be his guest a few times while switching. I got to see him at Cookies funeral, and was surprised that he remembered me. He was the engineer and Jerry Kelly the fireman the day # 91 hit a school bus in January 1970. He laughed and said " we both hit the floor, and screamed like girls" some years after that accident.

Petey and I never met, but if we had I am sure we would have become friends instantly....
Rest In Peace Sir, you certainly earned the respect and admiration of those who knew you well.

I think the unidentified fellow in the group picture is Robert Fogarty. Have a look at this clipping from the Hammond Times recording E.E. Franks retirement. Looks like it could be the same guy to me, 2nd from left. (Mr. Franks hired on in March 1907 according to the 1945 time book.)
