I do believe this is South Hammond. On the left side of the photo is the freight house.

What is the boxcar behind the engine?  Northen Pacific?  Can't quite make it out.

Yep, this is South Hammond, at the north end of the north yard, south of 165th Street, at about Vine street I'd say. Lyman street is to the right and parallels the yard. The NW-2 is kicking cars. I used to hear them working day and night as a kid living at Jackson and Vine.
Revving up...  silence .... and the light (or not-so-light!) BOOM of the car(s) hitting the standing cut, over and over.
I feel for the switchmen, it sure looks cold in this photo!

GREAT description of the sounds of kicking the cars, Eric!  Brings back memories!

And Ken, yes, that's an NP boxcar being shunted.

To Tom K.:  Thought you said in a previous post that your eyesight was failing.  Though you correctly pointed out in this photo the direction of the freighthouse, I sure can't see it!

I notice the hand rail are on the hood. When did shops move them to the deck ?
