I have never seen this shot of the Lincoln funeral car despite all the photo articles covering the route of the train.  It was built by the Southern Railroad.

After reading Denny's great article in the Hoosier Line I could not believe how that car was allowed to deteriorate.  At least someone had a fence around it before it burned.  Otherwise it looked as if some farmer had used it as a corncrib.

Hindsight is always 20/20. One would think that an artifact like that would have been taken and preserved. On the other hand, knowing the purpose of the car, maybe people of those times considered it bad ju-ju to save, or use the car again. Just a thought. If there would ever be something that should be in the Smithsonian, that car sure as hell would have been on top of the list. Did you know that the carriage Lincoln rode in to Ford's Theater that fateful night is here in South Bend at the Studebaker Museum?
