Former-Monon Depots
« on: March 10, 2014, 12:09:22 pm »
I spend a lot of time looking through L&N photos on the Internet trying to find photos of Monon depots after the merger.  Rarely do I find a photo of a former-Monon depot labeled as an L&N depot.  This brings up a couple of questions.

After the merger, did the L&N immediately close or stop using the Monon depots?  I imagine the depots in Louisville, Indianapolis and Chicago and maybe Lafayette and Bloomington were continued to be used, but what about all the smaller depots?

George,

The Louisville Times, 12/11/1972, listed 7 small depots that the L&N were to close.  These were: Pekin, Salem, Orleans, Paoli, Mitchell, Ellettsville, and Clear Creek.  W. T. Dudley said that the L&N was going toward a "mobile agency" concept and Bloomington was to be the "base" agency.  This article mentioned only plans and not the exact date of closure or dismantling.  It is a dim, hard to read article, but I will try to scan it and send to you.
