MITCHELL – Jay D. Blackwell, Sr., 73, passed away at 5:17 a.m. Friday, April 11, 2014, at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born December 16, 1940, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Richard B. and Nina M. (Wray) Blackwell.  He married Victoria Gale Thompson April 18, 1964.

He was retired from the CSX Railroad and was a 1958 graduate of Needmore High School.  Jay was a U. S. Navy veteran.

Surviving:  Wife, Victoria Gale Blackwell, Mitchell, Sons, Jay David (Alice) Blackwell, New Albany, Paul Bryon (Lori) Blackwell, Oolitic, Emmett Wade (Cheryl) Blackwell, Bedford, Randall Scott Blackwell, Lafayette, 8 grandchildren. 2¾ great grandchildren, brothers, Philip Blackwell, Bedford, Richard Blackwell, Springville, and Donald Blackwell, Springville

His parents preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Father Rick Eldred and Deacon Dave Reising officiating.  Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery with military honors accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 9:30 a.m. until the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
