Was this event on the Monon????
« on: June 26, 2014, 01:03:15 pm »
Anyone ever hear of an event that took place on August 27, 1919. There was a race between an Elgin motorcar and a Chicago to Indianapolis express train. A gentleman sent me an article from an Elgin brochure, however, it doesn't mention the name of the railroad. Anyone know anything? Drawing blanks.

It could have been the Monon, Big Four, or Pennsylvania.  I'm sure good roads were few and far between back then.

Just a thought; the article says the trip was 193 miles.  I think the Monon's distance was around 183 miles.

I wondered about that myself Mike. I also thought that because of the speed restrictions on the Wabash Bridge at Delphi, the train would been constrained.

I'm sure they carefully picked a train they could beat before the race even started.
