Westfield Question
« on: August 16, 2014, 10:02:57 pm »
The City of Westfield is currently trying to determine if the following "structures" are related to the Monon. They were found along the trail about on the west side of the former tracks just north of 161st street. Any idea of what these might be?

They are looking for adding displays including pictures of the former ROW in the area as trail markers.

Not that I'm an expert on any of this, but the concrete pad looks like it could be the base of a signal, perhaps to the signal that is shown on the profile CD at MM 164.6 just north of a county road that was two roads south of HWY 32.

The other o[not allowed]ect looks like a cistern to me.  No idea if the Monon used cisterns for anything.

The last two look like battery wells for the signals.

I agree Mike, in-ground concrete battery boxes.  If someone were available to show me where they're at (and to buy lunch), I could probably drive up there one day and look at them.  / Ron

Attached is a scan (1"=400' originally) of the portion of the Indianapolis Brach Valplan strip map MP 163.5 Westfield & Vicinity.

This is from a bunch of letter sized photocopies that I made from the one of the Valplan strip maps at WHQ dated about 1948 or later.

BTW the whole railroad is NOT in our file at WHQ. In particular there is a gap from Clear Creek (MP225) to MP 262 south of Orleans (M 261.5) plus the Indiana Store RR , French Lick Branch B&B Branch and C&WV ).  We do, however,  have set of ink on linen tracings of the full (48" x 24") Valplans for the C&WV and the original (1915 Notary sealed) tracings for the B&B

It's not the depot, but the Westfield Tower in 1977.  The photo was on eBay recently.  Sorry, I couldn't remove the watermark.

Hey Ron, I'd be glad to meet you up there since I work nearby.  If you like BBQ I'd even spring for Hoffas  :)
