New Albany Yard
« on: March 07, 2015, 06:33:24 pm »
What was the yard in New Albany used for in '40s-'50s time frame?  I know they had a freight house, and I assume a team track, and several customers in New Albany, but all I've read has been that the switchers were based at Youngtown Yard and ran all the New Albany jobs from there.  I think I saw a photo of some passenger cars there, but I think that was during a labor dispute in Louisville.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve, the K&I didn't have room to store any cars, so anything that showed up and was switched out for New Albany would have gone across on the daily switcher.  However customers weren't always ready for all of those cars.  Let's use Pillsbury for an example.  Perhaps they needed or could handle only 4 cars of sugar on a particular day, but the switcher brought 6 loads of sugar from the K&I yards.  The switcher would have stored 2 loads of sugar in the New Albany yards for the next days use.  This example could have been used for several other industries and could have resulted in several cars stored in the New Albany yards for a day or so.
