New Barriger Library posting- 1942 CI&L general Inspection
« on: September 19, 2018, 10:27:39 pm »
A new report from the 1942 General Inspection of the entire property has been posted. You will not be disappointed! There is a ton of very specific information included, as well as pictures of some things I've either never seen, or seen so clearly. The Ice House at South Hammond, the Indy freight house, a shot at shops with a steam cylinder on a flatcar. All locomotive status, whether serviceable, stored serviceable or out of service, etc. All freight cars active, several of which I have never seen, including ballast cars, wood boxcars with no roofs in coke service, misc. tool and bunk cars, etc. Reliable Service logos galore! Confirmation that the side walls survived the roundhouse fire at South Hammond, and that the back wall was rebuilt using bricks salvaged from the fire. The capacity of the coaling tower at South Hammond was 300 tons, at Monon was 230 tons, depot build dates, condition of all property, track weights and installation dates, Etc. etc. etc.

An amazing document...and it also provides a way to get to the index of the entire Barriger collection...which is here:

The PDF guide to the collection of papers is 815 pages! Well worth spending some time in searching; may be the target of a future trip to St. Louis for me - only 2 hours away.
