Now that I have a ton of time on my hands. Had anyone tried to change a number on there box cars?

If you're talking HO Scale: I've changed several cars from MON to CIL and changed numbers using Campbell Road Dry Transfers. I use Modelflex water-based paints, that match the boxcar red of boxcars and the Oxide red of Gondolas and hopper cars pretty well. I would also suggest replacing the entire reporting mark, not just one number. A pretty easy, satisfying job.
