 E-News & Notes
4 August 2022

It is almost here!!!   Our Annual Convention and Meeting in Michigan City!!!!!!

Our convention will be held at the Ramada by Wyndham, 5820 South Franklin Street, in Michigan City.  Remember, reservations must be made by August 15 to receive the discounted group rate.  The Ramada phone number is 219 814-4088.  It will be a good weekend with a South Shore shop tour Friday afternoon and the evening banquet with speaker Kevin Keefe, who is presently editor of Trains magazine.  Kevin promises to search the photo archives for some Monon images that we may not have seen before.  Saturday we are planning a train trip on the South Shore to Hammond and the evening speaker is Seth Lakin.  Seth is an expert modeler and his presentation will focus on the Monon,  as well as the other railroads that served Michigan City.  The August issue of The Hoosier Line features an excellent article by John Fuller on Michigan City.   Sunday will be the Annual Meeting followed by the traditional swap meet.  The Company Store will be open also.  A convention reservation form is attached.  Hope to see you there!

Archives - In January I asked Rick Dreistadt to become our archivist and he accepted.  For the past two years Rick has sorted through boxes of documents stored in Salem and has begun the task of placing these documents and records where they can be located.  For example, all the Monon timetables are now located in two flat file drawers, where before they were scattered in numerous boxes and filing cabinets.  Rick is uniquely qualified for this task as he was dispatcher for the Monon, and continued dispatching for the L&N, ending his career with CSX.  Now that the pandemic has subsided some, we plan to once again have some “open  archive” dates in the near future.  Check our website www.monon.org for these dates as well at The Hoosier Line magazine.  The archives are also open by appointment, contact Rick at monon329@yahoo.com or me at  jimcraig5185@gmail.com

Monon Railroad Historical-Technical Society remaining dates for 2022 Meetings & Convention

September 16, 17 & 18 Annual Meeting & Convention in Michigan City, IN.

November 5, starting at 1:00 p.m. at the Salem Depot, 206 South College, Salem, IN

Mini Convention Report

The April 16, 2022 “Mini” Convention, held at the Salem Depot was a great success.  It far exceeded anything I had hoped for!  The Company Store had a great day of sales!  We had many old and new society members to visit with.  There were four outstanding presentations during the convention.  Society attendees included many from out of state.  One member, David Stone, traveled from California and also made a generous donation of val maps from the quarry district.  Rick Dreistadt researched train sheets and shared information about unusual movements on the Monon during the 1960s.  We had another outstanding “Modeling the Monon” presentation by Mont Switzer.  In the afternoon, Richard Curtis gave a presentation of what is was like growing up in Monon Indiana with many vintage photos, including some rare Monon video he shot in August of 1963.  Later Seth Lakin, modeler and historian, gave a presentation on the railroads serving Michigan City, the site of this years annual convention. We received many positive comments and plan to have another Mini Convention in 2023.

Convention attendees inspect items during the “Yard Sale” during the Mini Convention.

Mini Convention guest were able to enjoy the Salem Depot’s HO scale Monon layout of Washington County.

Rick Dreistadt shared Monon train sheets with attendees and some of the unusual train movements of the Monon.
