CIL 440: 1947 Class repair?
« on: April 04, 2024, 11:03:52 am »
Found this photo among the EG Baker collection on the Lake States Archive website. It says it was taken in 1947, and it shows Monon Pacific 440 at Shops minus drivers, up on cribbing, with her smokebox door open. I would think that, provided the date recorded is correct, this would have to be among the very last of Monon steam to undergo Class repairs. Perhaps they had no choice in covering passenger power needs? Regardless, the 1946-1948 transition period had to have caused a bit of turmoil for the Shop forces after more than 50 years of maintaining the Monon's steam locomotives.
