Looks massive and heavy.
Was it extended in the middle at one point?

I doubt it was lengthened.  It was a primarily wooden car than was "modernized" at some point with steel sheathing.  With the exception of 4 steel coaches acquired in the 1920's and some steel head-end cars, all of MONON's pre-war passenger equipment was wood with steel-sheathing.

I read somewhere that the Monon acquired 2 ATSF diners,
but soon put them in work train service.
I wonder which diners these were - what numbers?  Pics?

Monon Dining Car #150 was built by B&S in August, 1911.  During 1935 & 1936 the Monon rebuilt several cars to accomodate A/C. This car most likely was one of them.
