Holding things down in Bloomington
« on: March 14, 2012, 01:51:40 pm »
The attached photo shows 3 of  the Monon's best employees holding down things in Bloomington.   My photo only identifies the men by last name -- Arnold, Marquardt, & Cummins.   I know Mr. Arnold died just recently and I know Mr Marquardt is still wiith it but I do not have any info about Cummins.

I hit the send button too quickly.   I meant to say Thank You to Joe Land for assisting me in learning how to size down the photos.

Sharon,   I believe these there fellows are sitting on the steps of a building that was once known as the Poplars.  If it is this was a home away from home for them.  Also close enough to the IU Campus that the walking scenery was probably why they were sitting outside on the step.

When built, the Populars was an exculsive privately owned off campus girl's residence hall.

You are all correct.  We stayed there for several years after it was converted to a hotel.  Indoor swimming pool, three bars, two restaurants, a really good place.  It was six stories high, and if someone threw an empty "coka-cola" can out of a sixth floor window, and it hit the tin roof on the house across the alley (in which people were living), you could hear it four blocks away, especially at 3:00 AM., and it took them 35 seconds to call the police.  This is not speculation.  We ran this test several times, (other guys, not me) and it worked the same way every time.  That may be why they moved us from the Poplars downtown to the Graham Hotel.  Just a wild guess.

As information, the Graham hotel was eight stories high, but the windows were painted shut, and there were no tin roofs around.  It was much quieter for those of us who wanted to sleep.  / Ron

PS, Leroy "Peanuts" Arnold and "Shiney" Bill Cummins are both gone now.
