Timetable & Passenger Train routing dilemma in1903
« on: April 12, 2012, 06:17:19 pm »
Only on CI&L Timetable #6 of May 10,1903, superceded December 20, 1903, Train #9 was scheduled to depart French Lick 20:45 and arrive at Michigan City 09:15 (“tomorrow”). The counter part into French Lick # 10 which departed French Lick 05:45 and arrived Shops 11:08 and went no farther north. There was a train #12 that originated at Lafayette  departing at 17:00 and arrived at Michigan City 20:20. A train was shown by note in the #12 column south of Lafayette as follows  “Light Train will leave Salem Street for North Street at 4:40 p.m.” (16:40).

On Timetable #7 and for a while thereafter Trains #9 and #12 provided the only first class service north of Monon to Michigan City. Train #9 originated at Bedford and #12 terminated at Lafayette.

At this point in time I am concerned only with service to/from French Lick and must forget the other oddities of the schedules until later. BTW #9 is not the only French Lick train that went north of Orleans. I have found no trains that went to the south of Orleans , just connections with main line trains.

BTW the Second Division Schedule of this Timetable had the following stations south starting with Shops (MP 118.2): 1.3 mi south were three  stations bracketed together as Lafayette (120.0): Salem St. (119.5) then 0.5 mi to the south North St. (120.9); and 1.0 farther south Lafayette  Jun. (121.0). The next station 1.5 miles to the south and outside the bracket was Gravelotte (122.5). The next to  the last station on this schedule was Bloomington (220.5) and 1.0 mile farther south was YARDS (121.5).

Question: Why was there an almost six hour layover at Lafayette?
