Orleans - June 2012

CSX stored about 50 covered hoppers in the Orleans siding in June. About 2/3 on the north side and the rest south of the depot. Train came south from Mitchell.

I remember seeing the car numbers posted on the old list, but don't have a copy. I could get a few, but most would require trespassing, something I will not do.

No, no, no. Don't trespass. My comments were more sarcastic than serious. I would never advocate such activity.

In the 220000 - 220032 series the only ones I can find info on are 220020, 220025 and 220031.  It looks like 220020 is the only one still being used.  The other two were sent to Progress Rail Services Corp in Albertville, AL earlier this year.  Possibly a scrapper.

In the 220600 - 220699 series there is still info showing for a bunch of them.  Most look like they are in storage at different places along the system.  220666 went through Lafayette on 7-15 on its way to be unloaded in Texas.  220082 also went through Lafayette around the same time but it is now in storage in Michigan.  The cars are being used to haul sand.  It looks like these cars may all end up in storage soon.  The cars' 50 year service life will be up in 2019 so they probably won't be around much longer.  When these cars were new they cost around $13,400 each.

The cars at Orleans are right along the highway where they can all be seen without trespassing.

I was just by there this evening and most of the north end are 25XXXX series. There were some with 24XXXX and I will check them against the list in the morning. Traffic safety prevented me from gawking and the south end of the cut is behind the trees. I might be able to look from the side road to check the numbers. I am not sure how many of the south end string will be visible from public access.
