1867 Monon articles
« on: August 13, 2012, 11:44:21 am »
Now that I have finished my dissertation I thought I might start sharing all my research.  I will post the articles by year.  Here are the ones I have for 1867.  These are all from the Bloomington Progress.  The date for each article is in the file name.  Two of the posts are one long article on the UP in two sections, no Monon content on those two.

I will post more 1867 articles.

Well not so fast, guess the boards don't accept TIF files so I will have to look into converting them...

John, did you forget to attach them?  I can't find them.  / Ron

I need to convert them from TIF to anything else I guess.

I have them in jpeg now, but they are still not showing up.  Is there a MB limit?

I believe there is a size limit John, but I don't know exactly what it is.  In the past when I've tried to post files that were too big, it just wouldn't take them.  Maybe one of the administrators could tell us?  / Ron

Converting them to JPEG made them into huge files, some as big as 14 MBs.  Is there another format that would be better suited for posting?  Sorry, I obviously have a learning curve on this.

John, what program are you using to convert them?  You should be able to reduce the file sizes after changing them.  You might even be able to reduce the size of the Tiff files and post them as they are.  Routinely the Tiffs are larger than the Jpegs.  / Ron

PS, send one of the Tiffs to my home address John, and let me see if I can reduce and post it.  It may save you some unnecessary work.

I used irfanview to convert the batch.  I will see if I can fiddle with the settings some more.

The chatroom does not take TIFs for some reason.  They take pps, ppsx, xlsx, xls, docx, doc, gif, jpg, mpg, pdf, png, txt, zip, jpeg.  But that is a setting made by the board administrator I think.

I need to figure out how to do this fast and easy if I am ever going to share the hundreds of articles I have.  ;D

John,
With a jpg open in Irfanview, click on "Image", then choose resize/resample in the drop down box.
Choose size 1024 x 8 hundred something.  Save the reduced image. That size file will post to the Board.

Joe thanks for the help, but it won't work.  I can resize it to 1024 x whatever but it makes the file unreadable.  These old newspaper articles are so tricky to make legible and not too large.  I also tried converting to gif, which while smaller, was still apparently too large to post even one file.

What is the size limit?  Does anyone know?

I would love to share all these articles, but I can't figure out how to do it.  I am not a computer guru, but I am no novice either.  If I can batch convert them, then I will share them, if I would have to do it individually then forget it.

I also would like to make my disseratation available free to MRHTS members, but that will also involve a very large file.  I don't know what that would entail.

John - could you put your dissertation on a CD so we could have it at the Archives for people to copy/download as they wish?  Also, would it be possible to put a condensed version (or excerpts) in a future issue of THL?

Thanks - Ken W.

Absolutely to both.  Once I get together a little money I will get a paper copy for the archives if you want.  I think they are around 50 dollars.
