The Monon Had It's Moments

Even on a railroad as fine tuned as the Monon, occasionally we would have our moments, as evidenced by this interruption of the normal wheel/rail relationship on engine #512 at the McDoel turntable pit.  No date for this picture, and probably a day better forgotten.   :-[  / Ron

Ron,  I would say it was right after the merger and was an L&N tranplant engineer.  That would be my story and stick with it.

Ron,  How was such a predicament corrected?  It would appear difficult to acquire needed leverage to lift the fallen end
of the engine.

I'm not Ron, but if you look at the men in the pit, they are putting cribbing under the engine.  When the get it built tall enough, they'll probably jack the engine to raise it, put rail down, lower the engine on the rail and roll her back on terra firma.

They crib under washouts, too.

I think that's exactly how they intended to do it Mike.  I have also seen them put the big hook on the turntable, get it as close as they could to the engine, then lift the engine and turn the table under it.  / Ron
