Power Car 2200
« on: February 12, 2012, 05:24:14 pm »
I recently had a discussion with Dick Cantwell, longtime Monon employee who was involved with the initial use of the power car 2200, and he told me this.  The car had been built to provide auxiliary power for the coaches parked at French Lick, but was only used once in that capacity.  The first time it was used down there, after about six hours it blew a piston in the engine providing the power, and before it was repaired and returned to that service, power lines for the coaches were installed, so a power car was no longer needed.  What use, if any, it had after that is not known to him.  / Ron

The MONON kept the Allied Full Cushion trucks until the end.
Does any one know why they were restricted to non interchange service?

Apparently the Allied Full Cushion trucks were prone to derail. They were banned from interchange in 1955.  Steve Dolzall

The Monon car X-5 first appeared in Official Register in the 1/51 issue and remains shown as X-5 through the 1/56 issue. From 1/57 through 1/64 it is shown as 2200. Apparently, there are two Monon diagrams for the X-5. The one I have, dated 4/23/54 shows a combination under frame tank with the capacity of 1050 gals. fuel and 1050 gals. water with a weight loaded of 116,280 lbs. A diagram posted on the Pic-List in December, 2011 illustrates a water tank inside the car with a capacity of 5400 gals. and the underframe tank holding  2100 gals. of fuel. In that form the weight loaded is listed at 160,100 lbs. That diagram is undated.
